Caption
Like the Bear Hunt at Dyrham Park, this dramatic Lion Hunt was purchased by William I Blathwayt (?1649–1717) in 1693 through the Flemish artist Jan Siberechts (1627–1703). The distinctive colouring of the lion which rears up in the centre of the composition as it is attacked by hounds is noted in the list of paintings purchased through Siberechts, where the painting appears as 'ye red Lion'. It was formerly attributed to the Flemish artist Frans Snyders (1759–1657), but it is now thought to be painted after a work by his pupil, Jan Fyt, in the manner of Frans Snyders.
