Caption
This is part of a predella, which formed the base of an altarpiece. It was originally from the church of Santa Maria di Ricorboli, near Florence, but was transferred in 1528 to San Gregorio in Piazza de’Mozzi, also in Florence (now destroyed). Christ, who is seated at the end of the table, to the left, is distinguished by his blue mantle. St. John kneels before him, with his head resting on Christ’s lap. The moment depicted is when Christ speaks the words, “But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.” Judas is shown raising his hands in protest. The picture has formerly been linked to the late style of Giotto. The Master of the Fabriano altarpiece was thought to have worked in Bernado Daddi’s workshop.
Summary
Oil painting on poplar panel, The Last Supper, by Puccio di Simone (fl.1345-1365) (Master of the Fabriano Altarpiece), inscribed: HOC OPVS FACIT FIERI DOMINA GIOVANNA VXOR OLIM GIANNI DE BARDIS PRO REMEDIO ANTIME ISSIVS GIANNI MAGISTER IOCTI DE FLORENTIA. Our Lord, distinguished by the blue mantle which He wears, is seated at the left end of a long table, with Saint John kneeling before Him, resting his head on His lap; other disciples are seated along the far side of the table, which is covered by a white cloth. The moment depicted is when Christ has spoken the words 'But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.' The reaction of Judas is to raise his hands in protest. The halo of Saint Peter is incomplete and the picture may have had a narrow strip removed from the top and left.
