Caption
Philip the Fair was Archduke of Austria and son of the Emperor Maximilian. He was father of the Emperors Charles V and Ferdinand. In 1494 he was made Governor of the Low Countries, and in 1504 he became King of Castile and Leon, and Philip I of Spain. There are at least four other versions of this portrait. This picture was probably painted just after his marriage to Joan the Mad (the second daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Castile) in 1496. He is shown wearing the chain and jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
