Caption
This picture was probably the left wing of a triptych, or a diptych, as it is now. It is joined with a corresponding panel depicting St. Catherine of Alexandria. St. John is shown in his customary hair shirt, on a rocky bank beside the River Jordan. In the background he can be seen baptising Christ. The artist’s name is taken from a painting, by the same hand, depicting the ‘Legend of St. Lucy’, dated 1480, in the church of St. Jacques, Bruges.
Summary
Oil painting on oak panel (left), Saint John the Baptist by the Master of the St Lucy Legend (fl.1475-1505). The left panel of St John, wearing a purple robe over a hair shirt, stands on a rocky bank beside the Jordan, facing right and gesturing with his right hand; in the background he is seen baptizing Christ; an attendant angel on the bank beside him; in the distance a town on a flat plain. This picture is probably the left wing of a triptych, or as joined here, a diptych, of which NT 446759.2 is the corresponding panel.
