Summary
Oil painting on panel, Peasants Dancing, by Abel Grimmer (c.1570 -1618/19), inscribed - ABEL GRIMER FACIT 1614. A landscape with a group of peasants dressed in brightly coloured clothes on a path in the foreground; those on the right are dancing to the bagpipes of a man seated behind, while on the left a well-to-do couple are walking with their children; in the background are furthur groups of figures. (signed). In this typical Dutch dune landscape, probably showing a wedding procession, an impromptu dance takes place to the sound of bagpipes. However, there are none of the moral overtones of Van der Venne’s picture of the same subject.
