Summary
Oil painting on oak panel, An Unknown Officer by Gerrit van Honthorst (Utrecht 1590 - Utrecht 1656), inscribed - G Honthorst, circa 1637-1639. A head-and-shoulders portrait, turned to the right, head facing, wearing armour with a pale crimson sash and lace collar; long hair and moustache.
Provenance
Earls of Romney, The Mote, near Maidstone [provenance unknown to the present Earl]; bought with The Mote and most of its contents from the 4th Earl of Romney by Marcus Samuel, later 1st Vt. Bearsted, in 1895, as were the portraits of Frederick V and Elizabeth of Bohemia (see below) that were bought in at Lord Romney's sale at Christie's in that year; in the collection of the 1st Vt. Bearsted, as The King & Queen of Bohemia', along with 9 medallion portraits of men in armour', and a Portrait of Princess Elizabeth' (from the Duke of Fife's sale, Duff House, 1907), all ascribed to Honthorst; all put up for sale by the 2nd Viscount at Christies 13th December 1929, and all but the present picture (which was lot 84 and b.i.) sold; Christie's, 26 May 1933, lot 48, but again unsold; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
