Summary
Oil painting on panel (oak), Boys flying Kites, probably by Justus de Gelder (Dordrecht 1650 – Vianen 1707), c.1670-75. A polder landscape with, left, a group of three boys, two seated on the ground, one of whom has his back to the spectator and is flying a kite; the third stands between them holding a kite, another boy is running past the group, also flying a kite with distinctive heraldic markings, (also visible on that on the left); from top to bottom, red, white and green stripes, with a red star on the white and a white star on the green; on the right yellow irises are in flower, on the top of one still in bud a huge green dragonfly has alighted.

Jean-Gilles-Maries-Joseph Schamp d' Averschoot (1765 - 1839), Ghent, his sale, Ghent, 14 September 1840 lot 116 (as by Dierck Maes); bought by Mme Durray of London for 630 francs; bought after the sale by Sir Henry Hucks Gibbs,1st Baron Aldenham (1819-1907); Alban George Gibbs, 2nd Baron Aldenham (1846 - 1936); his posthumous sale, Sotheby's 24 February 1937, lot 15 (as by Nicolaes Maes); bought by Pawsey & Payne, probably on behalf of Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 - 1948); given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 - 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death.
