Summary
Oil painting on panel, A River Scene, Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), monogrammed and dated on ferryboat: VG 1643. A view looking along a river with peasants and cattle in a ferryboat leaving shore; left, on the bank are cottages and a church spire seen above some trees; sailing boats in the distance and right, two men in a rowing boat with eel pots.
Provenance
Sir George Drummond sale, Christie's, 26 June 1919, lot 179; bought by Davis, probably on behalf of the 1st Lord Bearsted, in whose ms. My Pictures', dated 1919, it is recorded; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
