Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Turkey Cock and other Birds in a Garden by Melchior de Hondecoeter (Utrecht 1636 – Amsterdam 1695), signed and dated M d Hondecoeter Ao 1672. A turkey cock, peacock and peahen, ducks and a chicken with chicks are seen near a river or pond on the far side of which is a small house; behind them, left, is part of a balustrade on which a cock and hen are perched.
Provenance
First recorded by Waagen in the collection of Henry Labouchere, Lord Taunton (1798-1869); passed to his grandson E. A. V. Stanley (1879 - 1941) and sold privately at the time of the Stanley sale, July 1920; with Buttery (1868 - 1929), 1920; with Knoedler, from whom acquired by Lord Bearsted in July 1920 for £ 1, 250; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
