Caption
Edward Leyborne was the son of William Leyborne, who was Governor of Grenada, St. Vincent, and Tobago, and Anne Popham. He succeeded to the estates of Littlecote, Ramsbury, and Houndstrete Park, Pensford, on the death of his uncle, Francis Popham, in 1780. In 1805 he assumed the additional surname and arms of Popham. From the uniform worn by the sitter, we can determine that he is an officer wearing light infantry dress, which can be dated between 1784 and 1791. He later rose to the rank of general.
