Caption
The subject of this portrait is shown fishing in a stream in a garden, with his box of flies, fish basket and trout on the ground beside him. Francis Popham was the eldest son of Edward Popham, M.P. (1707-1779), from whom he inherited the properties of Hunstrete in Somerset, and Littlecote in Wiltshire. He married Dorothy Hutton, daughter of the Archbishop of Canterbury, but they had no children together.

A full-length portrait of Francis Popham, shown fishing in a garden stream, dressed in a pale mauve coat and red waistcoat, buff coloured breeches and grey stockings. Beside him on the grass lays his hat, a box of flies, a fish basket and two trout. An overshot mill is in the background.

Previous history unknown, but probably from the Leyborne-Popham family; with Knoedler, 1922, whence acquired by Lord Bearsted; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
