Summary
Oil painting on paper on oak panel, Harnham Ridge, near Salisbury/A Suffolk Landscape, probably Dedham by John Constable RA (East Bergholt 1776 – London 1837). A sketch showing a landscape with water meadows in the foreground and trees beyond, and, in the distance, rising ground. The centre and left of this scene appear to show the same piece of country as a drawing in the collection of the late Paul Oppé (exhibited RA, Diploma Gallery, The Paul Oppé Collection, 1958, No.178 as View near Dedham).
Provenance
A label on the back states that the picture was bought by Leggatt from Hugh Constable (grandson of the artist) in 1899 (Leggatt's pre-1923 archives have been destroyed); F.A. White sale, Christie's, 20 April 1934, lot 50, A hot Day, Dedham: bt. by Mrs. Jean Douglas; from whom acquired by Lord Bearsted in Oct. 1938, for £300; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
