Oil painting on canvas, Lady Sophia Bentinck, Duchess of Kent (1701 - 1741) by Herman van der Myn (Amsterdam 1684 - London 1741), signed lower left: VANDER MYN. 1731. Inscribed mid right: SOPHIA DAUGHTER OF HENRY / DUKE OF PORTLAND AND WIFE / OF HENRY DUKE OF KENT. / PAINTED BY H. VANDER MYN / 1731. A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, seated, turnd to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a grey satin dress with jewelled stomacher, red bow and blue mantle. Lady She was born the daughter of Hans William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland (1649-1709) and Jane Martha Temple (1672-1751). She married on 24th March 1728/9, as his second wife, Henry de Grey, 1st and last Duke of Kent (1671-1740), son of Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent (b.1645) and Mary Lucas, Baroness Lucas of Crudwell. The painting was introduced to Belton by John Cust,1st Earl Brownlow (1779-1833), whose first wife, Sophia Hume (1787/8-1814), was the Duchess's great-granddaughter.
