Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Grand Duke Ferdinand II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1610-1670), studio of Justus Sustermans (Antwerp 1597 - Florence 1618). A half-length portrait, in armour and white collar with a large blue feathered hat, a baton in his right hand resting on his helmet. There is a variant of a portrait of the 1650s in the Uffizi, Florence. The sitter's son, the future Cosimo III, visited England in 1669 and may have gifted the portrait to an ancestor of the Brownlow family.
Provenance
Possibly given by Cosimo III (1642 - 1723) to an ancestor of the Brownlow family when he visited England in 1669, the year before he succeeded his father; purchased with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow, C. St J. (b.1936) in 1984
