Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Isola Bella, Lago Maggiore, Italy, attributed to Pieter Tillemans (Antwerp 1684 – Suffolk 1734), after Antonio Joli (Modena c.1700 – Naples 1777). Count Charles III Borromeo conceived the transformation of the island from a barren rock with the architect Ang. Crivelli (d.1630) in honour of his wife Isabella. Renato II and his brother, Vitaliano II (d.1690) hrought it to its present appearance by constructing a palace surrounded with terraced gardens. The gardens are now also famed for its white peacocks. According to Tom Baring this is a copy after a picture by Antonio Joli, see New York, Christie's, January 26, 2005, lot 268.
