Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Margaret Brownlow (1687-1710) by Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1656/9 – London 1743). Inscribed. Artist - Michael Dahl. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, third daughter of Sir John Brownlow, seated with head turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, holding a backet of flowers in her lap and wearing a blue dress, over a white chemise and pink mantle, draped over her left arm which swirls behind her on the left. Landscape background. Margaret Brownlow (1687-1710) was the daughter of ‘Young’ Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Bt (1659-1697), the builder of Belton who was the son of Sir Richard Brownlow, 2nd Bt (1628-1668) and Alice Sherard (1659-1721), the daughter of Richard Sherard of Lopthorpe (d.1668) and Margaret Drewe. In 1710 her widowed mother tried to arrange a marriage to Lord Sherard, but Margaret declared that she would rather die first. Lord Willoughby then presented himself, and she did die (of smallpox). Peregrine Bertie, Lord Willoughby, afterwards 2nd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven (1686-1742), later consoled himself by marrying Margaret Brownlow's younger sister Jane Brownlow (1687-1710) the next year.
