Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Brownlow, later Countess of Exeter (1681 - 1723) as a Child by Willem Wissing (Amsterdam 1656 - Burghley House 1687), inscribed lower right ELIZ COUNTESSE/OF EXETER ELD/EST DAUGHTER/ OF SIR JOHN/BROWNLOWE/WISSING: FECT, circa 1684/5. A full-length portrait of a child, seated, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white satin robe with a cockatoo on an urn. Elizabeth Brownlow was born on 18 May 1681, the daughter of 'Young' Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Bt (1659 - 1697). and Alice Sherard (1659 - 1721). She married on 19 September 1699, as his second wife, John Cecil, Lord Burghley, later 6th Earl of Exeter (1624 - 1721), son of John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter (d.1700) and Lady Anne Cavendish. She died on 28 November 1723 at age 42.
