Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Cartwright, Viscountess Tyrconnel (d.1780) by Enoch Seeman the younger (Gdańsk c.1694 – London 1744), signed by the artist and dated 1735. A full-length portrait of a young woman, standing, head inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, dressed in the robes of a peeress, holding her red velvet cloak with her right hand and gesturing with her left hand towards a coronet on a blue velvet covered table on the right. Interior setting. She was the daughter of William Cartwright of Marnham, Nottinghamshire; married in 1732, as his second wife, Sir John Brownlow, Viscount Tyrconnel (1690-1724)his first wife Eleanor Cust having died in 1730. At first she was much disliked by her husband's family, but later became a cherished aunt of his Cust nephews and nieces. It was on a ship named after her that four of the five Innuit Indians brought to England by her nephew George Cartwright in 1772, and much feted, died on their way back to Labrador. She died in 1780. There were no children of the marriage.
