Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Sherard, Mrs Peter Whitcombe (b.1663) by Willem Wissing (Amsterdam 1656 - Burghley House 1687), circa 1683. Inscribed, bottom right: MS WHITCOMBE SISTER TO LADY/BROWNLOWE OF BELTON/PAINTED BY WISSING. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, seated, head inclined slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator wearing a blue dress, white bodice and red wrap, holding an arrow in a landscape. Mrs Whitcombe, sister of Lady Brownlow of Belton. The sitter was the daughter of Richard Sherard (d.1668) of Lopthorpe and Margaret Dewe, daughter of Lumley Dewe and married Peter Whitcombe of Braxted, Essex.
