Caption
This picture is one of the most distinguished survivals from the collection of Sir Abraham Hume, who bought it in Florence in 1787. The renowned art historian, Bernard Berenson, thought it was by Fra Bartolomeo himself. It is strongly influenced by Raphael’s late Florentine Madonnas. The picture is very similar to the Madonna and Child from the Rev. John Sanford's Collection at Corsham Court. It was acquired from the Casa Ugulini in Florence in the 1830s, with the fable that they were portraits of the Marchesa Montcatini of Lucca and her child.
