Caption
Jane Brownlow was the fourth surviving daughter of 'Young' Sir John Brownlow (1659-97) and Alice Sherard (1659-1721). In 1711, she married Peregrine Lord Willoughby, later 2nd Duke of Ancaster, who had earlier courted her elder sister Margaret (1687-1710). She is shown as St. Agnes, identified by the lamb, who was a Christian saint and virgin martyr.

Inscribed, bottom right: DUTCHESSE OF ANCASTER. A full-length portrait of the daughter of ‘Young’ Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Bt (1659 - 1697), the builder of Belton as a young girl, standing centre, gazing at the spectator, wearing a a blue dress, white sleeves and a red mantle, with a lamb in a landscape. She married Peregrine Bertie, 2nd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven (1686 - 1742) who had earlier courted her elder sister Margaret Brownlow (1687 - 1710) who died before she was able to marry him.
