Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Anne Brownlow, Lady Cust (1694-1779), circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A painted oval half-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the right, head turned to the left, wearing a simple brown dress fastened with a jewel at the breast. She was the daughter of Sir William Brownlow 4th Bt (1665-1702) and Dorothy Mason (1655?-1699-1700); married in 1717, Sir Richard Cust, 2nd Bt (1680-1734), of Pinchbeck, and sister of Sir John Brownlow, Viscount Tyrconnel (1690-1754). She was the mother of Sir John Cust (1718-70), Speaker of the House of Commons. For 45 years she was a widow, devoting herself to her large family and inheriting Belton in 1754, she made over her own house in Grantham (NT) to her son, Sir John, but exchanged with him again in 1766, so that he should have a house befitting his dignity as Speaker.
