Summary

Limewood, a suite of limewood applique carvings in the style of Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721), British, late 17th and mid-late 19th century. Installed in the Saloon at Belton House.

Full description

A set of limewood carvings comprised of two overmantels, four over-door carvings and two wall drops installed in the Saloon at Belton House. The overmantels installed above paintings in the east and west sides of the room date from 1688. The over-door carvings are mid-19th century and the wall drops are mid-19th century. The set is comprised of: 434858.1 Overmantel with gamebirds, fruit, flowers and foliage, in the style of Grinling Gibbons, late 17th century with 19th century restoration. A carved limewood applique overmantel comprised of a crest and two drops, installed in the west end of the Saloon at Belton House. 434858.2 Overmantel with fruit, flowers and oak foliage, Edmund Carpenter, March 1688.
