Summary
Two trencher salts (small containers for salt to be placed next to the trencher or plate), porcelain, after an English silver shape, rectangular with angled corners, with an indentation in the top and a slightly waisted base, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, late Kangxi (1662–1722) or early Yongzheng period (1722–35), 1710–25, decorated in the Imari palette in underglaze blue and overglaze red and gold with plants and flowers and with shaped borders around the base.
Full description
The so-called Imari palette of underglaze blue combined with overglaze red and other colours and gold was developed by porcelain producers in Arita in Japan during the second half of the 17th century. Imari was the name of the nearby port via which the wares were exported. By the early 18th century the Imari style was being imitated by Chinese producers in Jingdezhen.
