Summary
Carrara marble sculpture relief, Head of a Woman by Orazio Marinali (1643-1720), circa 1700. Carrara marble tablet carved in low relief with female head in right profile, hair tied at the back, from a frieze on the great stair of the Palazzo Grimani, Venice (consisting originally of at least sixteen heads). In mahogany frame. Part of set of five Carrara marble tablets and one framed document (see NT/HUG/SC/60a-f). The tablets represent various humours.
Provenance
Presented to Mrs Disraeli by Sir Philip Rose, Bt., with other sculpture from the same collection (NT/HUG/SC/55a,b). See Hughenden MSS R/I/D/6 and NT/HUG/SC/60F. NT/HUG/SC/12 also by Marinali. Disraeli Sale 1881; Park Place, Remenham (1918 inventory); sold Mallams, Oxford, 4.10.1989, bt. Agnew; purchased by NT from Agnew, 1994, £18,500 (with a grant of £5,000 from NACF).
