Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Woman in Black, possibly Phoebe Bowater, Mrs William Vernon, by John Vanderbank the younger (London 1694 - London 1739). c.1729. Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a middle-aged lady, turned slightly to the right, head inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, possibly wearing a widow's black gown and a black lace mantilla. Inscribed with a number 8. One of a pair of eighteenth century portraits.
