Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (1697-1759) by William Aikman (Forfar 1682 – London 1731). A full-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a red-velvet belted coat, ermine-trimmed cape and coronet, white cravat and cuffs, grey hose and shoes with gold buckles. Left hand on sword hilt, right hand on coronet resting on table draped in blue. Pillar top right, sky top left. Known as Thomas Viscount Coke, builder of Holkham Hall, he was created the Earl of Leicester in 1744.
