The identity of the sitter in this, and other versions, has long been a matter of doubt, as has the whereabouts of the original. The sitter must have moved in fashionable or court circles, but there are numerous ‘Elizabeth Howards’ who would fit the bill.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Howard, studio of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A three-quarter-length portrait, half turned to her right. Wearing a low-necked red-orange dress with white sleeves, brown cloak. Pearl necklace and earrings, and two ropes of pearls over shoulder. Plain brown background. Inscribed in cream top left 'Mis Howard', and in cream at lower left '23'. Previously described as an Unknown Lady in the manner of Lely.
