Caption
The sitter, once a favourite of King Henry VIII (distantly related to Anne Boleyn), was knighted in 1517. He was squire of the King's body, cupbearer and Master of the Horse from 1522. He was, however, criticised by the King's Council for being over-familiar, and 'not regarding his estate or degree'. He was Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex and ambassador to the court of Francois I (1521/24). He became linked to the treasonous plots of Lord Montague and Cardinal Pole (Exeter Conspiracy), and was beheaded on March 3 1539. This is another version of a painting now owned by Sutton Borough Council and purchased at Sotheby’s in 1989 which is believed to be a copy, made for Horace Walpole, of a painting now lost which hung in the parlour of Carew Manor from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.
