Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir John Trevelyan, 2nd Bt, MP of Nettlecombe (1670-1755) attributed to attributed to Jan van der Vaart (Haarlem 1647 – London 1727) - previously Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). Three-quarter-length portrait in armour wearing steel breast plate and blue coat, right hand restong on his helmet. Eldest surviving son of Sir George Trevelyan, 1st Bt of Nettlecombe; his daughter, Margaret married Alexander Luttrell in circa 1726 He married i.Urith Pole (ii) in 1700, Susanna Warren, daughter and heiress of William Warren of Stallensthorpe, Devon, by whom he had the 3rd Baronet. A Jacobite.

Probably a gift of the sitter to the father of his wife Urith, Sir John Pole, 3rd Bt (1649 - 1707/8), and thence by inheritance and descent; on loan from Sir Rochard Carew Pole since 1961
