Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Called Margaret Jefferies of Croome d'Abitot, Lady Coventry but really Lady Margaret Tufton, Lady Coventry (1636- 1687), attributed to John Baptist Closterman (fl.1690-1713), circa 1680. An oval portrait of the wife of Sir Thomas Coventry (1547 - 1607), and mother of the Lord Keeper Coventry but actually another Lady Coventry, painted a century later, wearing brown satin dress. Lady Margaret Tufton was the daughter of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet and Lady Margaret Sackville. She married George Coventry, 3rd Baron Coventry of Aylesborough, son of Thomas Coventry, 2nd Baron Coventry of Aylesborough and Mary Craven, on 18 July 1653 at Aldgersgate Street, London, England and died in 1687 at Canterbury, Kent. The children of Lady Margaret Tufton and George Coventry, 3rd Baron Coventry of Aylesborough were: John Coventry, 4th Baron Coventry of Aylesborough (1654-1687), the Hon. Margaret Coventry (1657-1681/82) and Thomas Coventry (1659-1660).
