Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Penelope Pole, the Hon. Mrs Francis Robartes (after 1649-before 1686), manner of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). A half-length portrait, wearing a brown and white dress with blue scarf, of the daughter of Sir Courtenay Pole, 2nd Bt and Ureth Shapcote, She was first wife of the Hon. Francis Robartes (1650-1718), to whom she was married in 1678. Her portrait looks more authenticly by Lely than her husband's, with greater vigour and impasto, and a seemingly different canvas and background.
