Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Unknown Boy, inscribed top centre: Earl of Effingham by Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661), signed and dated 1638. A portrait of a boy wearing a lace collar. In 1638 the earldom of Effingham was subsumed into that of Nottingham, and the holder was 59, which clearly does not tally. Nor do the Howards of Effingham appear to have had any connection with the Poles or the Carews, so that it is difficult to see how this spurious identity was concocted.
