Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edward Montagu, the 1st Earl of Sandwich, KG (1625-1672) in Garter Robes, after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), 1670-70. Apparently a cut-down to half-length portrait of the 1st Earl of Sandwich after a full-length version formerly in the family seat, Hinchingbroke. He is wearing a dark wig, lace cravat and the Order of the Garter. His personality is well-known due to the Diary of his cousin and secretary, Samuel Pepys.
Provenance
Left at the property when Cotehele was accepted in lieu of tax from Kenelm, 6th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (1873–1965) and transferred to the National Trust in 1947; and amongst the contents accepted in lieu of estate duty by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 1974
