Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called Edward Denny (b. c. 1575), aged 33, British (English) School, inscribed Aet Suae 33 An. Dom. 1608. A half-length portrait of a gentleman, wearing a white doublet with open lace white collar and cuffs. Also the panel is inscribed with four lines of French verse: 'Qui bien se mire bien se voit / qui bien se voit bien se cogn[oist] / qui bien se cognoist peu se prise / qui peu se prose sage est', and a fragmentary inscription 'Glorie sn. quiet [ ]ge / suorum [?] et se [?] sange [?].
Provenance
Left at the property when Cotehele was accepted in lieu of tax from Kenelm, 6th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (1873–1965) and transferred to the National Trust in 1947; and amongst the contents accepted in lieu of estate duty by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 1974
