Summary
Oak box of triangular shape with a rising lid secured by iron lock with elaborate escutcheon. Probably a composite piece. According to Victor Chinnery (2004): An oak box, the trapezoidal lid with narrow front, the front fitted with iron shield-shaped lockplate. English, c.1650-1700
Provenance
Bought for the Chapel by G.M.Trinick in August 1975. According to Victor Chinnery (2004): Date of acquisition unknown. A box of similar form (dated 1673) is illustrated by Victor Chinnery in Oak Furniture – The British Tradition, Woodbridge 1979, p. 364, Fig. 3:379 (ex-coll. John Fardon, Birmingham, sold by Christie’s, King Street, London, 24 October 1991, Lot 44), now in a private collection in the USA. Another similar (English or American?) box is in the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, USA.
