Summary
Fall front cherrywood? bureau or 'vargueno'; the front inlaid with geometrical patterns enclosing rosettes, the central panel inlaid with a vase and a spray of flowers, the interior with 13 drawers of varying size inlaid with similar geometrical pattern containing floral motifs, the drawers with drop handles. The cabinet is displayed on a plain gate leg stand (COT.F.49). According to Victor Chinnery (2004): A cedarwood cabinet or vargueño, the three-sided upraised cornice over a fall front, the exterior of which is now decorated with extensive geometric and floral inlay, the centre panel representing a pot of flowers and with decorated lock plate and hasp, the interior filled with a bank of thirteen drawers of various sizes, now similarly decorated with inlay. Italian (Spanish or Portuguese?) possibly seventeenth century with nineteenth century alterations.
