Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown French Knight of Malta, manner of Justus van Egmont (Leyden 1601 - Antwerp 1674), previously French School, 17th century. A half-length portrait of a man wearing a long, black curled wig and thin moustache, turned to the left and looking out at the spectator. He extends his right arm in front of him and rests his left upon his hip. His arms are sheathed in armour and he wears an armoured breastplate. A crimson sash falls across his body from his right shoulder and largely obscures the white Maltese cross upon his chest. There is a white linen collar at his throat. He stands against a brown scumbled background.
