Provenance: manuscript inscription on front fly-leaf: "M. 2d. volume. 1st. vol. is on the Romans, &c." [i.e. catalogue code and note written by John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Binding: late seventeenth-century or early eighteenth-century quarter-bound alum-tawed pink dyed sheepskin (faded to white on spine), with two sheets of marbled paper of different designs over both boards; stab-stitching visible in gutter margin of endpapers.
