Item hollowed out into two sections and used [as a cigarette box?] with title-page pasted in at the base; twentieth-century ms. labels for “Turkish” and “Virginians” pasted at foot of each section. Provenance: armorial bookplate signed H.J.F. Badeley 1945: Courtauld-Thomson Dorneywood [with motto: Fortiter aut suaviter. i.e. Lord Courtauld-Thomson (1865-1954)]; Binding: Eighteenth-century red and black dyed skin over boards on five recessed cords, gilt floral and foliage spine tooling in five compartments, each with a central acorn device, gilt floral border rolls and floral cornerpieces on black leather inlays on covers, gilt edges. Front cover stamped with later gilt lettering: The Virginians; Gilt stamp at foot of front pastedown: Le Livre Francais Brompton Road S.W.1.
