viii, 1350 p., [1] leaf of plates (frontis. port.) : ill., port. ; 8vo. Provenance: pencilled manuscript inscription "K. Clark Maxwell June 9th 1914 Levana Wimbledon Park", i.e. Katharine Clark-Maxwell, 1898-1971, on recto of first free end-paper. Twentieth century bookmark with a coloured illustration of a wood on one side and printed greeting "With all good wishes for a happy Christmas and a glad New Year. From Mrs. Fearnley Whittingstall. Flat 2, 29, Palace Gate, W.8" on the other, a four-page printed programme for "Scenes from Twelfth Night. Levana. Friday, December 10th, 1915. Saturday, December 11th, 1915", and a small piece of yellow ribbon loosely inserted at front of volume. Binding: twentieth century publisher's binding in padded green morocco; gilt tooling on turn-ins; gilt tooled title "Shakespeare" on upper board; gilt tooled title "Shakespeare's Works" on spine; marbled end-papers; text block edges stained red and gilded; lower board detached.
