Provenance: armorial Chippendale crest and coronet bookplate (Franks 17072): 'Earl of Ancram' [possibly William Henry Kerr, 4th Marquess of Lothian (1710-1775), styled Earl of Ancram 1735-1767; or William John Kerr, 5th Marquess of Lothian (1737-1815), styled Earl of Ancram 1767-1775]. Gilt stamp at head of spine: initial L and coronet of a marquess [i.e. marquess of Lothian]. Probably originally from the great library at Newbattle Abbey, the principal Scottish seat of the marquesses of Lothian. Binding: eighteenth- or nineteenth-century full sprinkled calf; blind roll pattern along board edges; recessed cords; gilt roll decoration and heraldic stamp on spine; gilt title on green morocco label on spine. Burnished edges.
