Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Bridget Sutton, Duchess of Rutland (before 1702 – d.1734) attributed to Charles Jervas (Dublin 1675 – London 1739), circa 1717. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated wearing a brown decollete dress with a red drape edged with ermine. Shown three-quarter length she sits upright, holding an orange (?) in her right hand. Dark background (inventory card). Brigit Sutton married John Manners (CAL/P/323) in 1717. In this portrait she holds and orange, a promise of fruitfulness (House Guide, last revised 1996).
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
