Summary
Oil painting on panel, The Tax Collector in the manner of Joos van Craesbeek (Neerlinter 1608 – Brussels 1662), indistinctly signed 'C.B.'. Three tax collectors are seated at a table outside a house, a group of jostling peasants behind them. Some steps lead up to the courtyard and a drummer stands to one side, a pile of armour on the other side. Other steps lead up to a street scene above where groups of people are shown between trees and houses. A man wearing a red jacket and plumed hat talks to a woman in a doorway to the right.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
