Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Jason' a Bay Racehorse, with a Groom in a Landscape by Sawrey Gilpin, RA (Scalesby Castle 1733 – Brompton 1807), signed and dated, lower left: S. Gilpin 1774. A bay hunter is shown facing left, held by a groom. The horse has three white fetlocks and a white blaze. It wears a bridle woth a red head-band. The groom wears a brown jacket, a bowler hat and a buckled shoes. The landscape merges into a grey sky.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
