Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Pilot, a Grey Racehorse with a Jockey up in a Racecourse Setting by Sawrey Gilpin, RA (Scalesby Castle 1733 – Brompton 1807), signed and dated, lower right: S. Gilpin 1776. A bay racehorse is shown, mounted by a jockey, facing left. The horse has a red head band and a navy rug edged with red. The jockey wears a red jacket and yellow breeches with leather riding boots and a black cap. In the background is the race-course with white posts to the left. (Inventory card). Pilot is the only one of this series of four of Sir Harry Harpur's best racehorses that was home bred.
