Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Harpur, later Sir Henry Harpur, 5th Bt. (1708 – 1748) and his brother John Harpur (d.1780) by Charles d'Agar (Paris 1669 – London 1723), 1718. The boy on the left is standing and wears red, he carries a black tricorn hat under his left arm. the boy on the left is seated, dressed in blue and has an oriental bird on his right hand. A pair with P/96, but stylistically more advanced. Henry was the eldest son, and inherited Calke in 1741.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Hapur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
