Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A View of Calke Park with a View of Lower Dog Kennel Pond, Figures, Cattle and Sheep, by John Glover (Houghton-on-the-Hill 1767 – Launceston, Tasmania 1849), c. 1821-5. Figures and cattles on grass on the foreground. Behind them are sheep amongst clumps of trees, water in the distance. An associated drawing for the composition can be found in an 1821 sketchbook by John Glover held in the British Museum, London (1905,0113.1.1-44). Exhibited Society of British Artists, 1824 (no.125, 'Scene near Caulke Abbey, Derbyshire') or 1825 (no.84, 'View near Caulke Abbey, Derbyshire').
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
