Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Trent at Swarkestone, Derbyshire by George Turner II (Comford 1843 - Idringehay 1910). 1887. Mainly pink, blue and green. A slightly impressionist view of a stretch of water with a village and trees behind, mist, reflections blurred. There are two children and some swans in the foreground. Signed by George Turner. The back is inscribed 'The Trent at Swarkestone, George Turner, Barrow on Trent, near Derby, 1887' and there is a label with Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe's monogram stuck on.
Provenance
Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust by Henry Harpur Crewe (1921-1991) and the contents, including this painting, were acquired with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government, in 1984
