Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Dorothy Plumpton, Mrs Clement Paston (c.1636 - 1662), aged 23, English School, 1659, inscribed 'Dorothie Plumpton the wife of Clement Paston Esq. Ao Dni 1659 aetat. 23', framed. She was the daughter of John Plumpton (1605 - 1644) of Plumpton and Anna Towneley. She married Clement Paston of Barningham Hall, Norfolk - grandson of Sir Edward Paston (1550 – 1630) -in around 1654/6. Clement Paston of Barningham and Appleton was a relative of the wives of Sir Henry Bedingfeld 1st Baronet and Sir Henry Bedingfeld 6th Baronet. Half length, body and face turned towards the dexter, brown eyes in the opposite direction, high brows, brown hair, ringlets all round face, with a line round of parting, curls rather bunched on each side and knot behind, she is wearing pearl ear drops. Dress: white satin, tight bodice cut low and oval, very full sleeves fastened to the bodice with pearl and diamond clasps, the left one visible, showing undergarment, small jewel consisting of a diamond, three pearls and a drop in front, a bright blue robe on the right and behind the left shoulder, and a pearl necklace. Marked on back 'Dorothie Plompton the wife of Clement Paston Esq, Ao Dni 1659 aetis suae 23', 'Vandyck pinxit'. Sir Anthony Vandyck died 1641.
